Fun with Picasa

We uploaded some of our photos into Picasa®.

Picasa® has facial recognition.

What you don't realize when you turn that on is that it will find ALL the "faces" on your computer.

For example, it went wild until we told it to skip the Sims® installation.

It also found the following:

This is part of our baby's jumper toy!

Picasa® also found a familiar face in the background of my China pictures.

But the highlight, better than all the rest, is a fellow we have labeled, "Nose Picker."

You can try and hide behind the iron (bronze?) statuary... but Picasa® is going to find you!

Wisdom of Crowds vs. The "Real" Art Critics

Taking its inspiration from the critically acclaimed book The Wisdom of Crowds, in which New Yorker business and financial columnist James Surowiecki asserts that a diverse crowd is often wiser at making decisions than expert individuals, Click! explores whether Surowiecki’s premise can be applied to the visual arts—is a diverse crowd just as “wise” at evaluating art as the trained experts? "

An interesting experiment; the thing is, the people who click the link (http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/click/) and vote are not exactly going to be a random sampling... they will be art fans and artists, so the Crowd is going to be a little "wiser" than the norm. Of course, if it works for Pandemic Flu Futures....

(Annoyingly, the site text is all in images, as well.) The sample photos are VERY "look at all the MySpace photos you could load up"... all party shots, no serious photography.

Taking Time

Tonight we (tore ourselves away from digital world and) went outside.

To look at the eclipse through a telescope.

In pjs, my husband's slippers, a coat and two scarves (it's snowing north).

I saw Saturn (tiny, moving) and its rings.

The moon was ruddy and full of shadows.

Photoshop in the Hands of A------s: Bad for Women, Bad for Everyone

http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/2007/07/19/whats_with_skinny_arms_faith_hill_and_redbook.php has two side by side pictures --- the original Faith Hill photo for the cover of Redbook and the retouched cover of the magazine.

Among other brilliant edits, Faith's face is a different shape and her arms are shrunk to pro-ana proportions.

(I would repost the images here, but Blogger will just scrunch them down to meaninglessness)

Photograph 1 class day 1 now over.

professor teacher dude ("call me Ben. just call me Ben.") [he's def. gen x MTV generation] gets to my name on the role call -- which is followed by my email. well, one of them. And he busts out, "oh yeah, we looked at your site last night"

this is the point where i sink lower in my chair. people read my dot com and think REALLY weird things.

I have 3 lives: work, home, internet. I try not to mix them. this class was, mentally, "work." and see I REALLY try not to mix work and home. that way I can say what I want in my blog and not worry about my boss reading it.... I'll roll with it--- just flip the class to
home.

next week I have to bring in photo paper, a camera, some eggs, an apron, and some bowls. we are doing photograms. ohhhhh. bow before me as I do Art. (capital A!)

Asking for Advice

Apologies to anyone on dial-up. I did tell Photoshop to shrink them, though.

I simply do not have wall space in the house to get these all blown up.

I have a few favorites.

I'm asking for advice from the artists/photographers/those who just have opinions on everything as to which to get copies of.

I got 4x5's, and these are the ones that still looked good enough to blow up. I've cropped them to proportion of 8 x 10, then "framed" them.
