Wait, What? Why??

I needed lunch.

I ordered lunch (and a couple days extra lunches).

And then I noticed one of those, "wait, what?" moments.

If you click on something on this site to add it to your pizza (in my case, by mistake green peppers, as well as tomato and chicken) then remove it (allergic, too cheap, too cheap)... it shows up on your receipt.

As, "no {whatever}."  Which makes sense, if your computer isn't smart enough to recognize "Hawaiian BBQ Chicken without BBQ Sauce," but makes no sense if there's no "standard menu item" involved.

In this case it's costing Domino's another pizza -- which I await now -- without green peppers.  Since the guy making it somehow saw the "no" in front of tomato and chicken, but not green peppers... which would make me very, very ill.

What was the developer thinking?!

You can think about big enterprises, and probably get the sinking feeling that this happens on a daily basis but none of the lowly franchise employees have a means or the clout to get it fixed with The Pizza Mothership Web Development team.

It's Been a While Since I Did One of These

Not two weeks after this story runs:
"Glamrock pigs could be world's first"

This pops on the CNN home page, "Pig Holds Woman Hostage."

I tell you, they KNOW.

Google Trends Leads Me Astray

So, fans (do I have fans?) of this blog know I have a running sub-theme about The Green Pigs.

So, when I saw, "Pig Book" on Google Trends on my iGoogle page (ok, I am waiting for Google to trade space in my brain for subliminal ads in exchange to being permanently wired any day now) I was very excited.

Except, it wasn't a book like this, only, you know, somehow very new, exciting and special (or it wouldn't be a Google Trend):

It was a book like this:

*sigh*

I have no comment on Congressional waste... I was just hoping for something really exciting on the Pig front.

The Things We Do When On Hold...

Like posting that not only are the pigs angry, they really aren't good to breath in. Pig brain tissue specificially.

Glowing Pigs: Part II

http://sify.com/news/fullstory.php?id=14587156

So we haven't just screwed with the pigs... we've potentially created a new species of glowing pigs....

[Technically a species is defined by the ability to breed, which doesn't really apply.]

12.13.2007

Ok, Stop Right There

The whole pig thing started with the glowing green pigs.

What do we think will happen when the cats, already one of the most easily irritated pet groups around, find out about these glowing orange cats?

Wild Boar Roundup!

Texas: Professional Boar Hunters

Why do they exist?

"I use the term ecological train wreck," said Mike Bodenchuk, the US Department. of Agriculture official in charge of Texas wildlife issues. "Pigs are incredibly adaptable and they are having an impact on a host of different ecosystems.
"On the beaches, for example, they are eating the eggs of endangered sea turtles. In far western Texas where we have desert landscapes, they are rooting up plants that may not be replaced in our lifetime.
"There isn't any part of the ecosystem they don't impact from watersheds, soils, native wildlife and domestic livestock to ground nesting birds. Just about everything that can be impacted by feral hogs is impacted."

More

and even more

And just a reminder, this is all our fault...

11.07.2007

Really, I didn't go looking for this...

Salon has an excellent article on the connection between agricultural antibiotic use and the growth of MRSA and other antibiotic-resistant drugs.

So, who's at fault when an a super bug grows--- the 16 yr old who only took 9 days of the 10 days of penicillin for his case of strep, or the pork farmer who feeds the same antibiotic daily to his swine pens? Salon cites a stat that 84% of antibiotics used in the US go to agriculture use.

So, yes, if I have a fever and white lumps on my tonsils, give me some antibiotics, because this mess isn't my fault!

Polling Be Damned, It's Another Pig Post

A new species, dubbed giant peccary, has been discovered in Brazil. Using "discovered" loosely here, as the locals knew they were there because they, you know, hunt, kill, eat and skin them...

Much like your average computer geek, they are big but non-aggressive, "when hunted Giant peccaries run away at high speed, again unlike other peccaries which travel in large groups and defend themselves very aggressively." (I say this AS a known computer geek.)

(I just thought this toy was cute...)

Danger in the Woods...

So, Wisconsin has declared open season on wild boars.

Wisconsin put a map online... Places Not To Go Camping With The Grandkids err... Wild Boar Map (pdf)

The best part is the bit where they describe the eating habits of wild boars....
"They're also efficient predators preying on many species including white-tailed deer fawns and ground-nesting birds like grouse, woodcock, turkeys and songbirds."

Dangerous, big, hairy, fawn-eating, and parasite and pseudorabies infected. Mmmm.

Wild Boars Wreck Havoc In Australia

It's the part about them predating on baby lambs that really icked me out....

People, people, people, have I taught you nothing??

Don't trap the pigs. Let them roam free, over your highly priced greenscaping. (See: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071005/ap_on_fe_st/odd_swine_at_large)

Otherwise, the revenge is not so pretty.

My husband thinks this ongoing thread (see the tag below) is slightly nutty. I say anyone who lets the cat climb on them in the bathtub (danger will robinson danger (I almost typed danger wil wheaton!)) has no room to talk.

Pig Eradication Project - Santa Cruz Island

http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2007/aug/29/officials-say-island-is-on-way-to-recovery-after/

Reading this, the biologist in me thinks that someone thought pretty hard about how to do this.

You don't remove the dead pigs, because in doing so you remove all the biomass - nutrients and minerals - that those pigs represent from the island. (You might have drugged them then removed them and replaced their mass... like the projects that spread dead salmon in the woods.) Since you aren't removing them, you use lead-free bullets. They don't say, but I would bet money they also didn't let the teams leave litter on the ground, and that all those fences are gone.

So, yes, some people are upset about the killing of the pigs. I get that, it was probably pretty awful. (And what a job! "Honey, I've got to run up to America for a year. We're hunting pigs. Back in a bit.") But I think the blame mostly lies with those who brought the pigs and boars there in the first place.

(Which is why, by the way, nanotechnology and created life worries me. I've read too much sci-fi about those little buggers evolving and eradicating the wrong things. Are we so sure we're smarter than the fools that introduced rabbits to Australia?)

8.24.2007

So, it had been a little quiet on the pig front

Not anymore...

Feral pigs ruin crops in Australia! Sugar cane, pineapple, bananas!
(hey, everyone has to have a niche. )

fourth-generation cloned pig

I don't think this is any better.

6.21.2007

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Seen today online, 4000 pounds of pig blood, all over the interstate.

I really don't think I want to know what use someone has for that much pig blood that they would ship it in a semi-truck in liquid form across states. I mean, really don't want to know. No where in the article does it mention the word "refrigerated."

*shudder*

Also, it's disrespectful of them.
