I see a lot of potential for a "serious" social networking tool, specifically in scientific and academic circles. Obviously your realtor sees the use of social networking (or should!), but there's a potential to tie people together based on research areas (here's the guy I studied with for my post-doc, here's my current PhD candidate group, here's the panel members for that government study, here's the woman who testifies as an expert witness).

I will be interested to see if anything develops. It's easier to find funding when there's money to be had, but not all the potential is about money.
