I'm pretty sure I had an IRC script that did that, way back in 1993. Wouldn't that make this patent moot?

Notice who's going to own that patent. They'd patent closing the screen when you're done with it ("just because everyone's done it doesn't mean we can't patent it!") if they thought there was money to be made.
I didn't want to seem, you know, biased against Microsoft.
