I think Amazon is doing a Netflix / UPS -- if you pay only for super saver, even though the items are all "ships in 24 hours" they sit on them for a week before mailing them.

Netflix got wide ranging news coverage for delaying delivery on heavy users.

And I know from tracking UPS packages that some of them will fly accross the country in 8 hours, then sit in the DFW area delivery centers for 2-4 days before being sent out on a truck.
